Talent Tip
If you’re hiring in South Africa, don’t assume AI salaries will lag global markets for long. Even though the country’s cost of living is lower than London or San Francisco, top AI engineers, data scientists, and ML ops professionals are already commanding premium packages. The best candidates are benchmarking themselves against international offers, not just local ones. If you’re building AI capability in-house, factor in above-market pay and clear career pathways, otherwise, your talent may be gone before you’ve even onboarded them.
AI Spotlight
Global firms are snapping up South African AI talent at pace, remote work has erased borders, and candidates are no longer restricted to what local employers offer. We’re seeing start-ups in Cape Town and Johannesburg lose strong candidates to US, EU, and UAE companies that can pay in their local currency. The spotlight here is that the AI skills market in South Africa is global by default. Employers that fail to adapt their packages risk being locked out of the race for critical skills.
Personal Insight
Having spoken with both hiring managers and candidates recently, salary is only part of the story. Yes, money matters, but what sways AI professionals is the chance to work on meaningful projects with modern tech stacks. South African employers who can’t outbid Silicon Valley can still win talent by offering growth, flexibility, and purpose-driven work. In other words, if you can’t compete on pay, compete on experience.
