Edition #38 – 77% Increase in Demand for SA AI Talent

Talent Tip

If you’re hiring in South Africa, don’t wait until the talent gap hits you. With AI skills demand surging by 77% in just 12 months, competition is fierce. Build future pipelines now by identifying internal staff who can be upskilled, while strengthening your employer brand to attract scarce AI expertise.

AI Spotlight

A recent report highlighted a sharp rise in AI-related job postings across South Africa from data scientists to prompt engineers. This trend shows AI adoption is no longer a future plan but a present reality, with companies in finance, healthcare, and retail actively recruiting. The challenge is that demand is outpacing supply, creating one of the most competitive skill markets in years.

Personal Insight

When I speak with clients, many admit they’re scrambling to hire AI specialists without a clear strategy. In my view, the smartest move is a hybrid approach, upskill the talent you already have while leveraging AI tools to enhance productivity. Companies that rely solely on external hires will face rising costs and longer hiring cycles, while those who balance build-and-buy strategies will future-proof their teams.

In the US, we’re already seeing niche AI roles like Forward Deployed Engineers, AI Product Strategists, and Ethical AI Specialists emerging as must-hires. These roles sit at the intersection of technical capability and business application, helping organisations bridge the gap between model building and real-world value. South Africa will likely feel this wave in the next 12–18 months, and those who prepare now will be positioned as market leaders when these skills hit demand locally.
